On Sunday, April 18, 2010, Shannon Gifford passed from this life after approximately a year's battle with cancer. She loved everything about sewing and especially loved the students, newsletter subscribers and book customers whom she had gotten to know over the years.

In tribute to my wife of 30+ years and also to allow her valuable works to continue to be available, I'm going to keep this site active. Please feel free to order. If you have any questions, you may email me at customerservice@sensiblesewing.com.

Shannon and I created a blog during our battle with cancer. It's at http://www.acoupleconquerscancer.com/. I invite you to visit there and to share the site with friends you feel would benefit from it. No money is made from the site. We just created it to try to help those who might be going through a similar situation.

Sensible SewingWould you like to...

  • Be able to go to your closet and choose an outfit that is custom-fit to your measurements?
  • Wear the latest styles in your favorite colors?
  • Stay up to date with creative, innovative sewing techniques?
  • Learn how to make your sewing processes easier, more consistent and more professional looking?

If so, you've come to the right place. Our core philosophy is that
sewing was meant to be...

  • Fun
No technical jargon here. We'll only teach you 21st century techniques in a simple, organized manner, accompanied by clear, colorful photos and/or videos.
  • Flattering
Shouldn't you be able to get the look YOU want from your wardrobe?
  • Affordable
We don't push high-priced equipment on this site. We're not corporately funded and we don't accept advertising.

In other words, you can make sense out of sewing here. You'll find lessons that are skill-oriented rather than project-oriented.

The Sensible Sewing Difference - Skill-Oriented Vs. Project-Oriented Teaching

Skill Oriented SewingProject-oriented instruction teaches you how to do one process. For example, if you wanted to learn how to put a zipper into a dress for yourself, you could go somewhere to learn how to do that and, when everything was said and done, you would know how to put a zipper into a dress for yourself.

But suppose in addition to that you'd like to learn how to put a zipper in a child's garment or a pair of men's pants or a jacket? With project-oriented instruction you would have to take classes or read materials for each of these processes.

With the skill-oriented instruction that you'll get from Sensible Sewing, when you learn how to put in a zipper, you'll learn how to use that skill across all applications. You'll be able to put in a zipper in any size and style of dress, jackets, pants and more. The same goes for learning how to put in buttons, pockets and much more.

In short, Sensible Sewing's skill-oriented instruction is much more efficient and considerably more cost-effective.
